"My Mom, Kate" is a personal tribute to my mother's incredible journey. This project chronicles her path from childhood in an abusive household, youth with a violent husband to a point where she broke the cycle of violence in her life. The diary is divided into four chapters, all which focus on a pivotal period in her life. This project brings together old family pictures, contemporary photography and heartfelt testaments that tell a story of a woman who never knew love and safety and yet created a life filled with it. By sharing my mother’s struggle I hope to inspire people to look deeper within themselves and find the same strength and kindness that my mother did. This project not only serves as a tribute to her life but also shines a light on the profound ability we all have to transcend, overcome and build a future filled with hope and love.
